Essential Tips for Cruise Travelers Visiting Santorini

Avoid "traps" - Enjoy Santorini

Santorini is one of the most breathtaking destinations in the world — and a highlight on many Aegean cruise itineraries. If your ship is making a stop on this stunning island, here are a few insider tips to help you make the most of your short stay, especially when it comes to getting to the main town and avoiding the crowds.

🚢 Which Port Are You Arriving At? Old Port (Fira) or New Port (Athinios)?

Santorini has two main cruise arrival points, and your experience will differ significantly depending on where you dock. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Old Port (Skala) – Accessible Only by Tender Boat

Most cruise ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to the Old Port beneath Fira. It’s charming, but there’s no road access, which means you’ll need to ascend the 260-meter cliff to reach the town.

You have three options to get up to Fira:

  • 🚡 Cable Car: The easiest and fastest way. It takes about 3 minutes and costs approximately €6 per person (one way). Lines can get very long, so try to get one of the earliest tender tickets from your ship if you want to avoid delays.

  • 🐴 Donkey Ride: A traditional option, but not recommended for everyone due to animal welfare concerns and steep terrain.

  • 🚶 Walk the 588 Steps: A scenic but strenuous option. Be cautious — the path can be slippery and shared with donkeys.

👉 Meeting point tip: Once you reach the top via cable car or on foot, our recommended meeting point is just 70 meters from the cable car exit — easy to find and close to the heart of Fira.

🛳️ 2. New Port (Athinios) – Direct Road Access

If your cruise ship uses the New Port (Athinios), you’ll disembark directly via tender boat at the dock. This is where all ferries and private transfers arrive.

Good news: No cable cars, no stairs — and if you’ve pre-booked a tour or transfer, your driver can meet you right at the pier for a smooth and fast departure.

📅 Plan Ahead to Maximize Your Time

Cruise stops in Santorini are usually limited to just a few hours. Here are some quick tips:

  • Disembark Early: To avoid crowds and make the most of your time, aim for an early tender number (especially for Old Port arrivals).

  • 🧭 Choose a Tour Wisely: Pick an itinerary that starts in Fira or includes transfer from either port to avoid time wasted in logistics.

  • 👜 Pack Smart: Comfortable shoes are a must — the island has many steps and uneven paths.

  • 📸 Don’t Miss the View: Even a short walk through Fira offers jaw-dropping views of the caldera and volcano — perfect for photos.

  • 🍷 Local Taste: If time allows, try local delicacies like tomatokeftedes or a glass of Assyrtiko wine.

💬 Final Word: Communication is Key

When booking any tour or transfer, let your provider know which port your cruise ship will dock at. This will help them organize everything efficiently and ensure a smooth pickup.
